Aug, 2014 – Sharks Too Much For MAX

JCL1, Sharks vs MAX at Tanuma
Aug 03, 2014 – By Navin Jinasena

In the final league game of the year, Chiba Sharks locked horns with the JCL Div 1 new comers, Max Cricket Club. Having already secured a birth in the semi-finals, this was more of a dead rubber but a win would ensure Sharks carry the momentum all the way to the Semi-Finals.

Chiba Sharks 1st XI of the Day (In batting Order): Ashiq, Creece, Bedingfield, Kale, Lollback, Jinasena, Takada, Haque(WK), Sancheti(C), Pradhan, Tallapragada. Sancheti ensured the Shark tradition of losing the toss and was put into the field without any hesitation by the Max skipper.

Bowling

Exif_JPEG_PICTURETakady took the new ball from the school-end and bowled good lines and lengths, beating the bat on a regular basis. Tallapragada, sharing the new ball, tested the Kobayashi brothers with plenty of swing movement. However it wasn’t until the introduction of Sancheti that the first breakthrough came around. A ripper of a delivery that was seaming away took a healthy edge from the younger Kobayashi’s bat which Creece was more than happy to hold on to.

Kitamura was in at 3 and showcased his not-so-fluent but effective technique to assist Amigo in rebuilding the innings and take them through to drinks. Lollback took the ball after the break with his ever-sharp medium-pacers and was unlucky not to grab any wickets. Jinasena enjoying his new role as the lead spinner kept the batsmen on check and was incredibly unlucky not to be among the wickets after two edges went down in consecutive deliveries.

Tallapragada finally broke the partnership by getting Kitamura caught at short cover. Taniyama, in at 4, batted sensibly along with Amigo and was threatening a long stay. Kale’s introduction however turned the complexion of the game on its head as Taniyama and danger-man Amigo were both sent back in a short span of deliveries. It was all downhill from then on for Max as Kale ran through the long tail with much ease. He was on a hatrick on couple of occasions and his spell included a stunning four-wicket-maiden. Kale finished off with bowling figures of 6-1-19-6.

Max huffed and puffed their way to 144 in their allotted overs losing 8 wickets in the process. Overall it was a very satisfying performance by the Sharks in the field who had generally been sharp and lasted 40 overs in extremely hot and humid conditions in Tanuma.

Batting
>>>>
With a timid target of 145 on the horizon and Sharks boasting a very formidable batting line-up, all indications were pointing towards a short, one-sided affair. However, it was to prove easier said than done as both the Sharks openers were back in the hut without adding much to the score. Ashiq was the first to fall popping one straight down mid-off’s throat before Creece was taken at Short cover by Taniyama. To be fair though it was a blinder of a catch and he was quite unfortunate to fall victim.

Exif_JPEG_PICTUREEnter Bedingfield and Kale, two of the most reliable batsmen in the Shark ranks, to set about establishing the Sharks innings. Things were looking good for the Sharks till Kale top-edged a shortish delivery up in the air, which the keeper pouched comfortably. Sharks 33-3. Lollback coming in at 5 was fluent from the get go and took Sharks through to drinks with Bedingfield. Once play resumed, both batsmen looked to be in control, sticking to basics; fending off good deliveries and putting away the bad ones.

With both Bedingfield and Lollback looking assured at the crease, Jinasena, coming in next for his first knock of the season, thought it a good time to answer an urgent call of nature. Ironically though Lollback had to pick that point of time to play what was later described by himself as a ‘S#$% shot’. However he was caught at deep square leg and Sharks were 61-4.

With Jinasena indisposed, Takada, hastily promoted to 6, was soon underway anchoring the innings and allowing Bedingfield, who’d been witnessing the fall of his Shark-mates from the other end, take the game back to the bowlers. It was a Bedingfield show from then on. He played shots all around the ground and the Max bowlers had no answers. He got his half-century with ease and knocked-off the remaining runs winning the match for Sharks with 10 overs to spare. Mention must be made of Takada’s batting as he was solid through-out carefully picking the bad deliveries to punish and ensuring that there would be no more slip-ups.
